The more I think about it...
...the more I feel that the entirety of the difference between North American and modern Japanese culture can be understood by watching one episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire from each country.

is it because they ask a lot of culture related questions?
No, not really. I mean they do but that's not really what makes it so different. The Japanese version is done in pairs of famous people - there's a lot of emphasis on sociality and amusement, less so on individual intelligence and confidence. A liberal amount of idol-worship is mixed in as well. You kind of have to be familiar with Japanese talk shows to understand the extent to which fame is a necessary pre-requisite to appear on TV.
i used to listen to Japanese pop songs, and so does many of my friends, once i was listening to some dedicated japanese pop music radio and heard that it is common that Japanese pop stars "retire", as in that they no longer is the main trend and slowly fades away from the sociality circle every 4-5 years (and of course, new pop stars take over). is it true?
I haven't really been in Japan long enough to comment from personal experience, but what I've heard is that female idols (essentially the same as "pop-stars", but a little less focused on what they do, and more so on what talk shows they show up on) marry and retire to have children, and male idols either fade away or become talkshow hosts themselves. I'm not sure that that's all that different from North America though. I hope that in four years we won't still be hearing about Paris Hilton.
